RepoOperator: A Local-F Codebase Intelligent Assistant, Exploring New Paths for Enterprise AI-Assisted Development

RepoOperator is a local-first codebase intelligent assistant designed to solve the dilemma between cloud AI coding tools (security risks) and local IDE plugins (limited features). It keeps code fully local (data never leaves your machine except query content for remote models) while providing a browser-based friendly UI. It supports connecting to local LLMs (via Ollama) or remote enterprise LLM services, making it ideal for teams prioritizing data security and compliance.

Current AI coding tools fall into two extremes:

1. Cloud services (e.g., GitHub Copilot): Smooth experience but requires code upload to third-party servers, posing compliance risks for sensitive enterprise code.
2. Local IDE plugins: Data stays local but has limited features and is tied to specific editors. RepoOperator explores a third path: Local runtime (all repo access/credentials stay local) + browser UI (modern experience) + flexible model connections (local/remote).

RepoOperator uses a three-layer architecture:

1. Browser UI: Built with Next.js, offering project selection, branch management, and codebase Q&A.
2. Local Worker: A Python service (3.11+) handling repo operations (git, file access) and LLM interactions (via LangGraph's classify→retrieve→answer workflow).
3. Local Backend: Local code repo and configured model backend. All sensitive operations are done in the Worker; code never leaves the local machine (only queries are sent if using remote models).

Two main installation methods:

• macOS: Use Homebrew: brew tap jungin-kim/repooperator → brew install repooperator (auto handles Python 3.12 dependencies).
• Other platforms/npm: npm install -g repooperator.

Post-install:

1. Run repooperator onboard to configure repo sources (GitLab/GitHub/local path) and model connections (Ollama/remote API). Config stored in ~/.repooperator/config.json (local only).
2. Start service: repooperator up (launches local Worker and Web service, prints local URL).

Repo Sources:

• GitLab (mature: project/branch lists, clone, read-only Q&A).

Token Tips: Use fine-grained tokens with minimal permissions (Metadata read + Contents read) for GitLab/GitHub.

Permission Modes:

• Read-only: No file changes allowed.
• Approval-based write: Changes are suggested as diffs; applied only after user approval.

Credential Management: Access tokens are stored locally in ~/.repooperator/config.json (never sent to external servers). Best practices:

• Don’t commit tokens to source control.
• Rotate exposed tokens regularly.
• Use minimal-permission, short-lived tokens.

RepoOperator is ideal for:

• Enterprises where code can’t be uploaded to public clouds.
• Teams needing AI tools on private infrastructure.
• Users wanting full control over models and data flows.

Trade-off: Sacrifices some cloud convenience (e.g., instant collaboration) for data sovereignty and compliance.
