Critical Inker: Using Socratic Questioning to Counter Cognitive Degradation from AI Writing

Critical Inker is a new AI writing assistant tool designed to help users maintain critical thinking and avoid cognitive degradation from over-reliance on AI writing tools. It uses Socratic-style dialogue and visual feedback, positioning AI as a 'thinking scaffold' rather than a substitute for human thought.

Cognitive deskilling refers to the gradual loss of human thinking abilities when technology takes over tasks that require active thought. In writing, over-reliance on AI tools (e.g., students using AI to generate essays without understanding logical arguments) has raised concerns. Research shows excessive dependence on external tools leads to reduced critical analysis and independent thinking abilities, creating an urgent need to balance AI efficiency with human cognitive preservation.

Critical Inker’s design philosophy is to make AI a thinking scaffold, not a replacement. It uses two complementary methods: 1) Socratic dialogue bot: Instead of direct criticism, it asks guiding questions (e.g., 'How does your conclusion derive from the premise?' or 'Are there counterexamples to your claim?') to prompt users to self-identify logical gaps. 2) Visual feedback system: Highlights potential logical issues in text, requiring users to actively click/hover for details—creating 'cognitive friction' to keep users engaged without disrupting their writing flow.

The tool’s core lies in automated logic analysis: 1) Argument extraction: Uses NLP and argument mining to identify claims, premises, evidence, and their logical relationships, achieving 91.2% accuracy in argument overlap with human annotations. 2) Logical validity assessment: Checks if premises support conclusions and detects fallacies, with an 87% accuracy rate—designed to assist, not replace, human judgment.

A small pilot study collected user feedback: Most found Socratic questions helped deepen their thinking about arguments, and visual feedback was non-intrusive. However, some users noted the dialogue could be verbose, suggesting a need to balance guided learning with efficiency.
