AI Agent Engineering Workshop: Practice and Extension Based on the Ed Donner Framework

This article introduces an open-source AI agent engineering workshop project based on the Ed Donner research framework. The capability boundary of Large Language Models (LLMs) has expanded from "conversation" to "action". AI agents empower models with the ability to make autonomous decisions and execute tasks: understanding complex goals and constraints, formulating multi-step plans, calling external tools, adjusting strategies based on feedback, and continuously learning and optimizing. This transformation turns AI from an "advisor" into an "executor", opening up new application possibilities.

The Ed Donner framework emphasizes four core principles:

1. Tool Usage: Call external tools like search engines, calculators, APIs to expand capabilities;
2. Reasoning and Planning: Use chain-of-thought/tree-of-thought techniques to decompose complex tasks and evaluate strategy pros and cons;
3. Memory and Context: Distinguish between short-term (conversation context), long-term (cross-session accumulation), and external (vector database) memory;
4. Reflection and Self-Improvement: Evaluate performance, identify errors, and optimize strategies through metacognitive abilities.

The project organizes learning content in a modular way:

• Module 1: Basic tool calling (weather query, stock data retrieval, etc.);
• Module 2: Multi-tool coordination (dependency relationships, parameter passing, error handling);
• Module 3: Reasoning chain construction (zero-shot/few-shot chain of thought, self-consistency verification);
