OGhidra: Combining Large Language Models with Ghidra to Usher in a New Era of AI-Driven Reverse Engineering

OGhidra is an innovative tool that combines large language models (LLMs) with the Ghidra reverse engineering platform, enabling AI-driven binary analysis through natural language interaction. It addresses the pain points of traditional reverse engineering, which relies on expert experience, is time-consuming, and prone to errors. By using Ollama for local deployment to ensure data privacy, it provides security researchers with an efficient and low-threshold reverse analysis method.

In the field of cybersecurity, reverse engineering is a core method for analyzing malware and discovering vulnerabilities. However, traditional work is highly dependent on expert manual operations, which are inefficient and error-prone. Ghidra, as an open-source reverse engineering framework from the NSA, is powerful but still requires deep professional knowledge. The birth of OGhidra aims to combine LLMs to lower the threshold of reverse engineering and improve efficiency.

OGhidra builds an intelligent interaction layer on top of Ghidra, running open-source LLMs locally via Ollama. Workflow: Users input natural language queries → the system converts them into Ghidra commands → executes analysis → returns results in a readable way, enabling conversational interaction without replacing Ghidra's core capabilities.

• Function analysis: Query function functions, identify network-related calls;
• Data flow analysis: Track sensitive data flow, locate password-related memory accesses;
• Malware analysis: Identify suspicious behaviors, encryption algorithms, and obfuscation techniques without manually traversing assembly code.

OGhidra streamlines repetitive analysis steps, allowing users to define tasks to automatically execute pre-checks. Automation not only improves efficiency but also maintains consistent analysis standards, reduces human omissions, and the automatically generated reports are beneficial for team collaboration and knowledge inheritance.

Running LLMs locally via Ollama ensures that sensitive binary data does not leave the user's control, solving the privacy risks of cloud-based analysis. Local deployment also reduces network latency, and users can choose the model size based on their hardware to balance performance and resource consumption.

OGhidra is open-sourced by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and is based on the Ghidra and Ollama ecosystems. The community can customize functions, share analysis scripts, contribute training data, jointly improve AI model performance, and accelerate the development of AI-assisted reverse engineering technology.

Current challenges: LLMs have insufficient understanding of complex/obfuscated code, and there are hallucination issues that require prompt optimization and verification. Future directions: Integrate multimodal AI to analyze program execution traces and memory layouts; combine more AI tools with professional security platforms, where AI enhances human capabilities rather than replacing experts.
