Adaal-AI: Using Artificial Intelligence to Solve Pakistan's Judicial Backlog Problem

Adaal-AI is an AI/ML project developed by BS Artificial Intelligence students. It aims to alleviate Pakistan's long-standing judicial case backlog problem through three core functions: automated legal research, intelligent FIR report generation, and Urdu legal aid, helping to make judicial services more efficient and inclusive.

Pakistan's judicial system faces a severe case backlog problem, with millions of cases pending trial. Ordinary citizens often take years to get justice, which not only consumes a lot of social resources but also makes vulnerable groups feel helpless when seeking legal protection. Against this background, a group of young AI developers proposed using artificial intelligence technology to inject vitality into the judicial system, and the Adaal-AI project came into being.

Adaal-AI includes three functional modules:

1. Automated Legal Research: Quickly retrieves and analyzes legal documents using natural language processing technology, providing accurate information support for practitioners, improving efficiency, and democratizing access to legal resources;
2. Intelligent FIR Drafting System: Supports Urdu input. After users describe an incident, it automatically generates a formal report that complies with legal norms, lowering the threshold for filing a report;
3. Citizen Legal Aid Platform: Users can get preliminary legal guidance by asking questions in Urdu, serving as the "first line of defense" before seeking professional help.

Project development needs to address multi-level challenges:

• Language Localization: Emphasizes Urdu support to meet local user needs;
• Legal Accuracy: Balances automated efficiency with manual review to avoid incorrect suggestions;
• Accessibility: Adapts to low-bandwidth environments and basic devices to ensure wide usage.

Significance: Reveals the trend of AI moving from the laboratory to the forefront of social governance, providing a concrete case for "AI for Social Good"; Limitations: Faces challenges such as data privacy protection, definition of responsibility attribution, impact of the digital divide, and integration with existing judicial infrastructure.

Adaal-AI represents an attempt to use technology to solve structural problems in developing countries. Although it cannot completely change the judicial system, it provides a direction for tech for good. We look forward to more similar projects in the future that, under the premise of respecting legal professionalism, make judicial services more efficient, inclusive, and human-centered.
